How to Get to Belize and Sarteneja

International flights arrive daily to Belize City from several U.S. Cities and from other parts of the world. U.S. Carriers Continental and American Airlines are two offering flights out of Miami and Houston. Consult their web sites for flight schedules and fares.

The Venus, Perez and Sarteneja Bus Lines serve Sarteneja from Belize City, Orange Walk and Corozol for only $8 Blz. From Belize City: The Sarteneja Bus Line leaves Belize City at noon passing by the junction to the Phillip Goldsen International Airport at 12:30 p.m. arriving in Orange Walk at 2 p.m. and leaving again for Sarteneja at approximately 3:30 p.m. The Venus Bus Line leaves from the Venus Bus Station at 12:30 p.m., with a stop in Orange Walk, arriving in Sarteneja at about 4 p.m. The Perez Bus Line leaves from Belize City at 5 p.m.and arrives in Sarteneja at about 8 p.m.

Sarteneja re-opened its local airstrip earlier this year which allows charter flights from Belize City, Corozol and elsewhere directly to the village.

An alternative means of travel to northern Belize is through Cancun which is served by many U.S. carriers including Alaska Airlines, American, Continental and Northwest and then taking a modern express bus leaving from the main bus station in downtown Cancun to Chetumal. Buses leave every hour for the five-hour ride down the Mexican Yucatan. The cost is about $17 U.S. but you will need pesos to purchase your ticket. At the main bus terminal in Chetumal you will find a Novelo's Bus Line that will travel across the border into Belize and to points further south. You will pass through Mexican and Belizian customs and immigration.

Note: Upon arriving in Cancun you will be issued an exit card at the airport. Make sure that when you pass through Mexican immigration on the way to Belize that you have them stamp your form as a "double entry" when you pay your $20 exit fee to avoid paying it again when you depart Cancun on the way home.

The bus into Belize will stop at the regional center of Corozol and there are several ways to get to Sarteneja:

• By Bus. Regular local buses from the Corozol Station leave for Sarteneja. Count on a couple of hours for the trip.

• By Water Taxi on the Thunderbolt. Sarteneja is not a regular stop on the Thunderbolt but will stop at Sarteneja, if requested. The high speed boat departs Corozol daily at 7 a.m. for the 1/2 hour ride. Cost is approximately $15 US.
