is a quiet seaside village in the northern region of Belize,
situated on the Sarteneja Peninsula, is about 30 minutes by
boat to the regional center of Corozol. |

| The
name Sarteneja comes from a Mayan word meaning "taking
water from the rock". The village of 2,000 is situated
on ancient Mayan wells that were drilled through the local bedrock.
Many Mayan ruins can be explored nearby. |

| In 1956
Hurricane Janet totally destroyed the village of thatched-roof
wooden houses which have since been mainly replaced with modern
concrete structures. |

| Until
1970, Sarteneja was only accessible by water from Belize City
or nearby Corozol. Electricity became widely available in the
1970s and telephones in 1990. The village has a municipal water
system providing purified and filtered water safe for drinking. |
